چکیده
Response to Sympathoinhibitory Effect of Diltiazem and Prevention of Aneurysm Formation We thank Dr Tsuda1 for the important remark and his interest in our work. Unfortunately, we did not perform measurements on the effect of diltiazem on sympathetic nerve activity in our study and as mechanism of action of the drug we observed some direct inhibitory action on the inflammatory activity of cultured monocytic cells.2 Nevertheless, we agree that our proposed mechanism is probably not the only one operative in the highly complex model of angiotensin II–induced aneurysm formation in ApoE−/− mice3 and that diltiazem in vivo may have additional effects. A role of the sympathetic nervous system in vascular inflammatory processes is established,4 and in high concentrations diltiazem is known to inhibit neuronal voltagedependent calcium channels.5 Thus, the mechanism proposed by Dr Tsuda is indeed plausible to contribute to the antianeurysmal effect of Diltiazem.

Sympathoinhibitory Effect of Diltiazem and Prevention of Aneurysm Formation To the Editor: We read with great interest the article by Mieth and colleagues1 dealing with the effect of the benzothiazepine-type calcium channel blocker, diltiazem, on aortic aneurysm formation in a mouse model. The results of their study demonstrated that diltiazem significantly prevented abdominal aneurysm formatio...
متن کاملL-type calcium channel inhibitor diltiazem prevents aneurysm formation by blood pressure-independent anti-inflammatory effects.
Formation of abdominal aortic aneurysms is a progressive inflammatory process that involves infiltration and differentiation of monocytes in the vessel wall, proliferation and migration of smooth muscle cells, and eventually the degradation of the internal elastic lamina, which leads to outward vascular remodeling and distension of the vessel. Because calcium channel blockers exert multiple ben...
متن کاملDiltiazem Co-Treatment in Renal Transplant Patients Receiving Cyclosporine with Respect to Concentration at Two Hours (C2)
Cyclosporine (CsA) is a drug that has been used for prevention of kidney transplant rejection for many years. Diltiazem with the inhibition of cyclosporine metabolism and clearance will increase CsA concentration and CsA dose can be decreased. The aim of this study was the evaluation of diltiazem effect on CsA dose adjustment with respect to C2. Forty stable renal transplant p...

Objective(s): The aim of this study is to investigate the renoprotective effect of erythropoietin (EPO) on hypovolemic shock and ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury on kidneys as end-organs in an experimentally-created ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA) model.Materials and Methods: Thirty anesthetized Sprague-Dawley male rats were ra...
متن کاملGlutaminergic receptors in rostral ventrolateral medulla mediate the cardiovascular responses to activation of bed nucleus of the stria terminalis in female rats
The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST) has been known to contain estrogen (E)-concentrating neurons. In addition, injections of E into BST have been reported to potentiate the sympathoinhibitory arterial pressure (AP) and heart rate (HR) responses elicited by glutamate (Glu) stimulation. In this study, the effect of glutamate antagonist receptors in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVL...
